About Our Program

Abilene Crime Stoppers, Inc.
Working together to combat crime within our communities, making a difference
in our way of life.
HISTORY
In October 1980, members of the Abilene Police Department collaborated with the Citizens Against Crime committee to explore innovative crime prevention initiatives. During this collaboration, they were introduced to a film showcasing the Crime Stoppers program, which had already been successfully implemented in several Texas cities. Among those in attendance was Bill Terry of KTAB Television, who enthusiastically supported bringing the program to Abilene.
On November 12, 1980. the Citizens Against Crime committee, operating under the Abilene Chamber of Commerce, formally recommended establishing a local Crime Stoppers program. This proposal was presented to the chamber's executive committee for consideration.
By March 1981, "Abilene Crime Stoppers Inc." was officially established as a nonprofit organization and received certification from the State of Texas Crime Stoppers Advisory Council. The program was designed as a community-based initiative, fostering a tri-lateral partnership among citizens, the media, and law enforcement. This collaborative effort aimed to enhance crime prevention and promote public safety within the Abilene community.
